Bhutan boasts more than 54 species of rhododendron and 6 other sub-species. There are over 300 species of orchids in a multitude of colours, from an altitude of 4000mts to 250mts. The political will of the government as well as religion has played an important role in environment conversation and Bhutan received a medal from the UN Environment body as the champion of the Earth. Because of the range of climatic conditions various species grow in different parts of the country, some of the plants are sensitive to the change of environment. In the higher altitude the legendary flower, called Blue Poppy (Meconopsis grandis) believed to have been extinct until it was discovered by 2 British botanists in Sikkim. The fragile lady’s Slipper and many species of white poppies and alpine Primulas are common sight. Rhododendrons of various colours, growing at an elevation of 1400mts to 4600mts high, measuring as tall as 20 mts to as low as 1 foot producing various scents and some are used for incense. The most interesting to see are the rhododendron, Kesangiai, Bhutananse and Tsariya found only in Bhutan. Flower viewing can be combined tour and trek from mid-March to the mid-May. The cultural tour as far as Bumthang crossing many passes over 3500mts covered with rhododendrons of every hue. In order to feel the alpine rhododendrons we can arrange to camp in Thrumsingla pass 4000mts high to enjoy the flower and the scenery of the eastern Himalayas. In the early March the first flowers that are in full bloom are magnolia, wild cherries, primulas, rhododendron arborium, peaches and wild apricots together with new shoots of every plants and offering you a feeling of the Earth being dressed up.
